The best decade in the modern history of East German football is remembered for the famous 1974 World Cup group stage victory over West Germany, but probably more should have been done. With Jürgen Sparwasser, Jürgen Dörner, Jürgen Croy, Eberhard Vogel, Bernd Bransch, Martin Hoffmann and Peter Ducke active and at the peak of their careers in the 1970s, East Germany should have been a regular participant in the World Cup and European Cup of Nations tournaments. Despite always tough opponents at home in the qualifiers, the East German team never managed to handle the results away from home. As a result, the 1974 World Cup was their only major participation in non-Olympic tournaments.
