To choose your single fin properly and understand how it works, here are the essential factors to consider:

• Length: increasing the length of your fin gives you more stability, while decreasing it enhances maneuverability and responsiveness.

• Width (base): increasing the width of your fin increases speed, while decreasing it improves maneuverability and responsiveness.

So choose a larger and wider fin if you prioritize noseriding, and a smaller and narrower one to facilitate your turns and reduce the arc of your curves.

• Rake: the more significant the rake (i.e., the more "cupped" the fin is), the more drive the board will have, meaning it will hold and be stable in curves.

• Flex: the more flexible the fin, the more maneuverability and pop you gain, but you will also lose some top speed.

Beyond the specific characteristics of each fin, their placement in the box is crucial:
The further back the fin is, and thus closer to the tail, the more stability and grip you will have, but you will lose maneuverability.
Conversely, the further the fin is from the tail, the more maneuverable and responsive the board will be, at the cost of losing stability.
Play with moving your single fin forward or backward during your sessions; the difference is striking, and you will be able to surf the same board with completely different approaches and styles.
